What is a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)?

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is caused when bacteria enter the urinary system, which includes the bladder (cystitis), kidneys, and urethra. The most common type is a bladder infection.

What are the symptoms of a UTI?

  • Burning or stinging when you pass urine

  • Needing to go to the toilet more often than usual

  • Discomfort or pain in the lower tummy

  • Passing small amounts of urine frequently

UTIs are very common in women and can usually be treated quickly. If left untreated, they can sometimes spread to the kidneys and cause more serious illness — which is why early assessment and treatment is important.

UTI Assessment & Treatment at Whittington Pharmacy

As part of the NHS Pharmacy First service, non-pregnant women aged 16–64 with uncomplicated urine tract infections (UTIs) can be assessed at Whittington Pharmacy in Lichfield.

  • Consultation is free - in person at the pharmacy or via a secure remote consultation.

  • Our pharmacist will assess your symptoms first in a private consultation.

  • If your symptoms meet the NHS criteria, we can supply prescription-only antibiotics on the NHS without you needing to see your GP.

  • If antibiotics aren't appropriate, we'll still provide expert advice and, if needed, refer you to your GP or urgent NHS services.

  • You’ll only pay the standard NHS prescription charge (currently £9.90) if you usually pay for prescriptions. If you are normally exempt (e.g. under 19 in full-time education, or hold an exemption certificate), then your treatment is free of charge.
